About Jorge L. Hernandez, Architect
Jorge L. Hernandez is a professor and a practitioner of Architecture. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami in 1980 and his Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia in 1985, where he studied design and the architectural history and theory of the Renaissance. He joined the faculty of the University of Virginia in 1985 and, since 1987, has been a professor of Architecture at the University of Miami.
Jorge has lectured in Europe and the United States, taught for the Prince of Wales School of Architecture, and participated in numerous international symposiums and conferences. His work has been published in the United States, South America, and Europe in various books and journals. In 1996, he was selected to be one of 40 architects featured in that decade's 40 Under 40, and he collaborated with Vincent Scully on a book entitled Between Two Towers: The Drawings of the School of Miami. In 2002, Kliczkowski Publishers issued a monograph entitled Casas/Houses: Jorge L. Hernandez.
His firm, Jorge L. Hernandez Architect PA (JLH Architect), founded in 1987, has completed 2 transit-oriented mixed-use projects in Coral Gables ranging from 400,000-600,000 square feet, a master plan for Old Spanish Village, a seven-acre urban mixed-use neighborhood in historic downtownCoral Gables, the Brickell Bridge to downtown Miami, the Williamsburg, VA and James City CountyCourthouse and other civic projects. Jorge L. Hernandez, Architect, has planned campuses for several private schools and designed buildings for private and religious institutions. The firm was responsible for the LEED-certified restoration of the historic Coral Gables Police & Fire Station, a NationalRegister WPA building, now the Coral Gables Museum. His professional work involves the design of custom residences and
their interiors, many of which have been widely published. The larger number, nearly 100, are in
South Florida.
Jorge has served on numerous national, state, and local boards and agencies. He was Vice Chair of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and an advisor of Dade Heritage Trust. He has served as Chair of the City of Coral Gables Historic Preservation Board, Chair of the State of Florida HistoricPreservation Advisory Council, Vice Chair of the Florida Historical Commission, a Trustee of the Florida Trust, and a member of the Florida State Historical Marker Council and the Historic St.Augustine Direct Support Organization Board of Directors for the stewardship of Spanish Colonial sites in St. Augustine. He served on the Coral Gables Board of Architects, the Historic Preservation Board, and the Planning and Zoning Board.
